FairPhone - Fairhub
Fairhub is an integrated environment in the android OS settings. Here users can find insights about the lifespan of their components. Consider consumption,efficiency and lifespan. In addition to these insights, the Fairhub is full of suggestions to make the use of your phone as sustainable as possible and to get a longer life out of the components.
Finally, Fairhub notifies you when one of your measurable components has reached the end of its lifespan. Fairhub informs the users along the way of the effect from each insights or measurable data.

Challenges
FairPhone community: Fairphone has a big active community which is closely involved in any changes or updates regarding the phone. We we're challenged to not only implement the wishes of Fairphone but also include the community in the process.
Life-cycle: Swapping out components, re-using phone components and fair pay is all part of a better life-cycle of the Fairphone. This challenged us to chime in to a part of the life-cycle that could use even more improvement.
My Approach
Discovery Phase
Cause of Concept: Researching the life-cycle of the Fairphone's, translating it into a data visualization to gather the weakest point in the cycle: The phone usage.
Deskresearch: Researching the different settings and preferences that affect the usage stage.
Design and Development
Low-fi Prototyping: Designing different concepts in Figma and implementing them into one singular idea.
A-B testing: Testing out different designs and implementations of media, and gathering feedback from the target group and experts.
Hi-fi prototype in Figma: Designing the prototype in Figma, implementing the right corporate identity.
Testing and Iteration
User Testing: Reached out to various different students and teachers for feedback.
Conducting Experts: Testing the prototype versions with experts with various backgrounds regarding Design, development and teaching.
Results
Our final concept, Fairhub, integrated into the Android OS, empowers users to optimize settings for prolonging component lifespan. It displays remaining lifespan and highlights impactful settings, focusing on battery and display, the most frequently replaced components.
To answer our design question: “What UI interventions could we include in the OS to make the user experience integrate the knowlegde that we have about smartphone use and climate impacts?”
We centralized settings for battery and display lifespan extension, enabling easy access and visual observation of changes' effects. This reduces component replacement needs, thereby lowering CO2 emissions from overuse and production.
